Key Info About the Scottish Open 2024

The Scottish Open will be the final ranking event before the turn of the year, so a stellar cast of snooker stars will be eager to end 2024 on a high. After the qualifiers in late October, the final stages will take place from December 9 to December 15 at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland.

It’s also the penultimate event of the Home Nations Series. Like other Home Nations Series competitions in the 2024–25 snooker season, the Scottish Open 2024 will have a bigger prize pool than previous years. The overall prize fund will be worth £550,400, while the champion will walk away with a £100,000 paycheck.

Understanding the Snooker Scottish Open 2024

The Scottish Open, reintroduced in 2016 as part of the Home Nations Series, is contested for The Stephen Hendry Trophy. The event has been a staple of the snooker calendar since its revival.

Players outside the top 32 seeds competed in the opening two rounds at Ponds Forge in Sheffield (October 28-30). The 32 survivors booked their flights to Scotland, where they’ll face a tough test against top seeds in the round of 64.

The first five rounds are best-of-seven, while the quarterfinals are best-of-nine, the semi-finals are best-of-11, and the final is a best-of-17 affair.

Past Winners of the Scottish Snooker Open

  • 2023 – Gary Wilson beat Noppon Saengkham
  • 2022 – Gary Wilson beat Joe O’Connor
  • 2021 – Luca Brecel beat John Higgins
  • 2020 – Mark Selby beat Ronnie O’Sullivan
  • 2019 – Mark Selby beat Jack Lisowski

Three players have won the last five editions of the Scottish Open, with Gary Wilson eyeing a hat-trick this year. Last year, he effortlessly beat Noppon Saengkham in the final to keep hold of his title. What do our 2024 Scottish snooker Open predictions say about his title credentials this time around? Read on to find out.

Ronnie O’Sullivan @ 6.00 (5/1)

Judd Trump has pulled out of the Scottish Open, which makes Ronnie’O Sullivan the de facto favorite. The Rocket has the shortest 2024 Scottish Open snooker odds, but his recent form has been far from inspiring. Despite his legendary career, he has never won the Scottish Open since its revival, with his only victory in the competition coming back in 2000.

Kyren Wilson @ 7.00 (6/1)

Kyren Wilson should feature more prominently in 2024 Scottish snooker Open predictions. The 32-year-old made it to the UK Championship last four in November, and earlier, he lifted the World Snooker Championship for the first time in his career.

Neil Robertson @ 8.00 (7/1)

Neil Robertson bowed out of the UK Championship last 32 after losing to eventual champion Judd Trump, but UK bookies are still labeling him as a title challenger in Edinburgh. The Aussie clinched the English Open title in September, making him a strong contender for our Scottish Open 2024 snooker predictions as well.

Mark Selby @ 8.50 (15/2)

Winning the British Open has been the sole bright spot in Selby’s otherwise lackluster 2024 campaign. The Jester from Leicester still deserves to be a part of any 2024 snooker Scottish Open betting preview discussion.

Mark Allen @ 12.00 (11/1)

Mark Allen has made three semi-final appearances this year, including two in his last three outings. So, he could be a wildcard pick for Scottish Open 2024 snooker predictions and grab the coveted trophy.

Kyren Wilson appears to be the perfect candidate to bet on the Scottish snooker Open 2024. Wilson has been the second most in-form player in the world after Judd Trump, and since Trump is out of the picture, Wilson should have a free run ahead of him.

Momentum is on his side as he currently holds a career-high second place in the rankings, following a trophy-laden year that included victories at the World Snooker Championship, Xi’an Grand Prix, and Northern Ireland Open.

Gary Wilson is not fond of Edinburgh, but the Scottish capital has been a lucky hunting ground for him. Wilson is currently enjoying a 14-match winning streak in the Scottish Open and has won the tournament twice in a row. A three-peat seems unlikely, but we expect him to win the first quarter that includes the likes of Neil Robertson, Mark Williams, and Shaun Murphy.

Wilson has not been in great form this year. He couldn’t make it past the last 32 at the UK Championship and stopped at the International Championship quarter-final. But his incredible record in Scotland leads us to believe we’ll get to see a resurgent Wilson in this competition; the odds for this outcome are tasty enough, at least.

Chris Wakelin to Win Third Quarter @ 8.00 (7/1)

Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, Pang Junxu, and Wu Yize have more favorable 2024 Scottish Open snooker odds to win the third quarter than Chris Wakelin. But the International Championship runner-up has recent victories against Higgins, Junxu, and Yize, while O’Sullivan has been having a difficult season. So, our vote goes to Wakelin here.

Wakelin has made some deep runs in big competitions lately. He was one of the last 16 competitors at the UK Championship and came within breathing distance of winning the 2024 International Championship. The Beast also made the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open in October.

We will wrap up our 2024 Scottish snooker Open predictions by reasserting our faith in Kyren Wilson and Chris Wakelin. The Englishmen are in fine form, so we’re confident they won’t disappoint.
