History of the Rugby 7s South Africa Series

The South Africa Sevens have been a regular fixture in the Sevens calendar for the past two decades, taking place in various stadiums across the country. Since 2015-16, it has been based at the Cape Town Stadium and has produced some varied results, as the past five tournaments indicate:

  • 2016-17 – England beat South Africa
  • 2017-18 – New Zealand beat Argentina
  • 2018-19 – Fiji beat United States
  • 2019-20 – New Zealand beat South Africa
  • 2022-23 – Samoa beat New Zealand

With the home nation failing to win since 2015-16, can they break that hoodoo this weekend? Read on to find out with our rugby 7s 2023-24 betting tips.

The 2022-23 Sevens season saw the first five events won by five different teams, and we say this season will begin in a similarly varied fashion, at least across the first two tournaments. Expect New Zealand to bounce back from their disappointing semi-final loss to Argentina by going all the way here in Cape Town.

Just a reminder of the nation’s credentials – they won it all last season, putting together a dominant run in the second half of the year, picking up five of the final seven events to lift the trophy. This kind of caliber doesn’t disappear simply because Argentina tipped them over in Dubai, and with odds of 3.75 (11/4), they are a strong bet here in South Africa.

Last weekend, we correctly called that South Africa would top their pool and go on to win the title; this weekend, we say the home nation stumbles. Simply put, the Blitzboks were far too inconsistent last season – after also winning the Dubai Sevens – to trust that they’re a different team already this time around.

Playing at home is a whole different kind of pressure, and off the back of last week’s celebrations, it would be no surprise if South Africa dropped a game in pool play. Ireland played well for their fifth-placed finish in Dubai, with competitive losses against Argentina and Fiji, plus good wins over Australia, Spain, and Samoa. They’ve been known to do well in pool play, so a big performance here in Cape Town would not be unrealistic at all.

This time last year, Samoa stunned home fans by defeating first South Africa and then New Zealand to win the Cape Town Sevens. Sure, that was their only title of the season, and they put in some fairly poor performances at times, but there’s something alluring about their odds of 15.00 (14/1) to pull off a repeat.

Last weekend, Samoa played well in all but one of their matches. Sure, the results weren’t great – losses to South Africa, New Zealand, Argentina, and Ireland – but in three of those matches, they were right in the game up until the final whistle, and the outcome certainly could have differed if the bounce of the ball went another way. Combine these promising signs with their history in Cape Town, and you get a mighty tempting high-odds bet.

The 2023-24 SVNS season is starting with a hiss and a roar, with two events taking place in back-to-back weeks to get the new series underway. South Africa won a revamped Dubai tournament last weekend, but we say it will be last season’s champions, New Zealand, who prevail in Cape Town, leaving fans to mourn yet another year without South African victory at home. Kickstart your bet right now.
