Italy returns to the VNL with a familiar face – and a burning desire to reclaim their crown. In 2023, they fielded 11 players who tasted victory in the 2022 Ankara final, but the absence of one superstar proved crucial: Paola Egonu.

Her 12-year reign (2007-2018) before going on a five-year national team hiatus was nothing short of remarkable. She boasts five FIVB World Grand Prix titles and two World Championship medals (a silver in 2010 and a bronze in 2014). With her experience and leadership, Thaisa will be instrumental in Brazil’s quest for VNL glory. Opponents, beware – this seasoned champion is back to dominate the hardwood.
The FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League is an annual international volleyball tournament pitting the senior women’s national teams from member countries of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport’s global governing body. The inaugural edition took place in May-July 2018, culminating in a thrilling final held in Nanjing, China, where the United States emerged victorious over Turkey.
The Volleyball Women’s Nations League currently features two distinct phases: the Pool Phase and the Finals.

The Italians are historically the favorites in this match, as they have won 68% of the total matches played between the two sides. Stefano Lavarini’s side, however, are no pushovers as they made it to the last four of the competition in 2023. Poland also won in their last two matches against Italy, so we will back them to pull off a three-peat against the 2022 champions.

This is a pretty big call, as the Brazilians are the standout favorites going into this tie. They are at 1.15 to see off the Maple Leaves, but interestingly, they succumbed to a surprise defeat to the Canadians the last time they had played them.
Brazil will grace the hardwood for the first time since their 3-0 humiliation against the Dominican Republic, while Canada will look to follow up their clean sweep of the Czech Republic with another statement win. It still appears to be a risky call given the level of firepower Brazil have in their team, but we see value in betting on Canada to prevail in this one with a little sense to back Brazilians.

Serbia and the Dominican Republic are set to lock horns in their Nations League opener. The Serbians have the upper hand in head-to-head stats, but the bookmakers are considering them the underdogs for this one.
The Dominicans are on a ten-match winning streak, while the Serbians were defeated in their last match against China. Therefore, it seems risky to back a Serbia win here. However, the new-looking Serbia team under Giovanni Guidetti can halt the Dominican momentum with their youthful lineup.
Heading into this tournament, we recommend betting on particular matchups rather than outright odds. After all, a lot could change in a one-month tournament. Italy and Poland are set to play out one of the most exciting matches in the tournament, but we expect the bragging rights to go to Poland.
